Cupping

Cupping Therapy at Union Square NYC by James Silverman MS L.Ac., LMT

Cupping therapy is an ancient healing practice that uses suction to promote circulation, release tension, and restore balance within the body. The cups are placed on the skin to create a vacuum effect, which draws blood flow to the surface and encourages natural healing.

This therapy is often used to:

  • Relieve muscle stiffness and pain

  • Reduce inflammation and promote recovery

  • Improve circulation and energy flow

  • Support relaxation and stress relief

Many people describe cupping as deeply soothing, leaving them with a sense of lightness and increased mobility. Circular marks may appear on the skin after treatment—these are not bruises but a sign of increased blood flow, and they typically fade within a few days.

Cupping therapy can be integrated with acupuncture or massage session to enhance therapeutic benefits.

Gua Sha

GuaSha at Union Square NYC by James Silverman MS L.Ac., LMT

Gua Sha is a traditional East Asian healing technique that involves gently scraping the skin with a smooth-edged tool to promote circulation, release muscle tension, and support the body’s natural healing processes.

During a session, a practitioner applies lotion to the skin, then uses a gua sha tool to scrape the skin. This scraping action increases blood flow, stimulates the lymphatic system, and helps break up adhesions in the connective tissue (fascia).

Benefits of Gua Sha

  • Relieves muscle tightness and pain by reducing inflammation and promoting circulation

  • Supports detoxification by stimulating lymphatic drainage

  • Boosts immune function through improved microcirculation

  • Reduces headaches, stiffness, and tension commonly found in the neck, shoulders, and back

  • Improves skin health by enhancing blood flow, often giving a radiant, healthy glow

What to Expect

The scraping may leave temporary red or purple marks (called “sha”) on the skin. These are not bruises but rather a release of stagnation in the tissues. The marks typically fade within a few days and are a sign of the body’s healing response.

Applications

  • Musculoskeletal pain (neck, shoulders, back, legs)

  • Stress and tension relief

  • Headaches and migraines

  • Facial rejuvenation (when performed gently on the face, it’s known as “facial gua sha”)

  • General wellness and relaxation
